Troubles With Theo

Chapter Seven

I knew Theo from the office where I work. I’m in editorial, working for a company that produces a couple of different corporate magazines. It’s not exactly what I love or what I’ve always wanted to do, but it allows me to work with words, and that’s the most important thing. Not only that, but it has the occasional cool payoff. Every year I get at least one company sponsored trip abroad to cover some convention or other for one of our clients. Those are good times – going abroad on the company expense account has to be one of the best ways to travel. First class all the way, with lots of food and booze to pass the time. Not only that, but I get to make a lot of great contacts in the field of publishing – something that should set me up well for when I eventually move on.

But anyway: I knew Theo from work. He was a tall guy, with messy brown hair and glasses. I always thought he had a kind of monk-like look about him. In a good way; I mean, he always looked really calm and collected, and whenever you asked him a question he would pause for a moment before answering – you could tell that he was assembling the answer in his head rather than just blurting out the first thing that came to mind. I liked that about him. I liked that he seemed to think differently.

Well, anyway, it so happened that this year me and Theo would be going to France together to cover the annual conference of a big firm that made plant machinery. It was set to be a pretty dull conference, but we only had a few assignments to complete, and most of our time would therefore be spent lazing around by the side of the pool, or getting drunk in the nearby town. It was set to be a fairly ideal week away.

We were both excited about it. And – in my case at least – kind of nervous too. See, the thing was, I’d started to really notice Theo lately. I’d started to notice the fact that he was actually pretty muscular beneath his work shirt, and that he was always cool and in control, and that he had really lovely hands. More than any of that though, I’d started to notice what a great talker he was. Me and him had shared many conversations in the break room at work, and every single one of them I remembered fondly. He just had a way of talking that could make anything interesting, and his conversations always went beyond the usual chatter that I shared with my co-workers.

I guess, if I’m honest with myself, I was pretty attracted to Theo. I always had been, ever since I first set eyes on him. Except, of course, I’d never acted on this attraction. I’d never had the opportunity to. Apart from anything else I
